Richard and family squeezed a trip to Victoria Falls in at the beginning of the month. Highlights included an Elephant back safari, a helicopter flip over the Victoria Falls, a canoe trip down the Zambezi river ( kids loved the adventure ) and the wonderful hospitality at The Victoria Falls safari Lodge.
The Durban office celebrated the year end at Cubana's on Florida Rd and finished off at Moyo on the Pier. The Joburg office went to Coco Brazil in Midrand.
2010 proved to be a very trying year for a lot of travel companies. The World Cup in South Africa certainly helped some make money but a lot of clients that would normally have come to SA stayed away over that period. KDR were lucky in that we have both a large tour section to our company along with the leisure side so we were able to take advantage of peoples tour needs when that was the part of the business that needed to be focussed on. This made up for any loss of regular business we experienced with our normal outbound clients where they cancelled their Mauritius trips for example, to rather spend the money buying tickets for the World cup.
Nadia and Billy Kidgell welcomed their daughter Grace into the world on the 15th. Nadia ( nee Grosvenor ) used to do content for KDR and our congratulations goes out to both of them.
Baby's not withstanding, there was also the small matter of the world cup finals. Congratulations to all the Durbanites who put down their surfboards for a while and made Durban the most spoken about destination of the World cup. Our Port Zimbali and Self catering consultants were kept very busy over this period.
World cup time and we are as caught up in the fever as anyone else. Some of the Jo'burg office were at the opening game against Mexico.
In a clockwise direction starting top left:
Richard being hijacked by Tequila armed Mexicans; Soccer city at Sunset; Victor one of the KDR Tourguides and dedicated driver for the day; Denis and Ken; Richard, Graham and Iku; Richard and Ken guarding their
R30 Budweisers; Some Mexican ladies.
This was a month spent looking for World cup accommodation for Soccer fans as well as preparing for one of the largest and most historically important games of rugby in South Africa since the RWC in '95. Sportstravel had quite a few groups at both the Semi Final and the Final in Soweto. With our expertise in selling tours of Soweto and dealing with large corporate groups doing "Amazing race" days we gave the supporters one of the more memorable trips they will ever have.
April is so far a month filled with birthdays, Jenna, Dane and Brenda. After the busy Easter weekend rush, a nice relaxing drink or two to celebrate each other’s birthdays, is a well deserved present. We’ll be at The Keg and Trout in Hillcrest if any one wishes to join us on the 16th of April in the afternoon.
Jenna finished her trip around KZN to familiarise herself with some properties and re-aquaint herself with tohers. And...our newest site: Welgevonden.info is complete.
The Welgevonden Private Game Reserve, a malaria free game reserve in the Waterberg. Its close proximity to both Johannesburg and Pretoria makes it ideal for short luxurious breaks.

The Durban office traveled up to Midrand, and both offices spent the weekend at Kens new Guest House Bella Khaya.

Richard and his family went on their dream holiday to Mauritius.
He has promised to tell us how it went
Julia and I spent a wonderful weekend at Makakatana Bay Lodge.
Makakatana is most probably my favorite lodge in northern KwaZulu Natal.
The rooms were beautiful and spacious, and the hospitality offered at the lodge was of 5 star standards. On the game drive we stopped for a sundowner on the bank of the estuary, where we found ourselves not more than 5 meters away from around 20 hippos. What a wonderful experience.
We congratulate our inspiring director, Denis Creighton on completing the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour in under 4 hours! Well done Denis, maybe next year we will make a team-building event out of it!
The month started with new blood joining the KZN office. Nicola Aitken will be setting up Victoria Falls Tours for the inbound market. Her title will bounce between product development and tour leading. She has joined KDR bringing with her a solid understanding of the VicFalls products and some fresh ideas on marketing and selling the product and we wish her the best in this new KDR venture.
The Johannesburg office went to the Elephant Sanctuary in Hartebeespoort Dam for a wonderful team-building day.
Maritsa said that the guide, Ignatius, gave a talk about the elephant anatomy and their life-style both in the wild and in captivity.
Themba, the baby elephant gave Zizi a very snotty kiss, and Cecile felt another elephant’s slimy tongue.
Bongani made a friend for life with Themba. Themba didn’t want to pose for a photo with Bongani, he was only interested in poking Bongani with his trunk?
Afterwards everybody went to the deck for lunch and drinks and watched the elephants eat.
Everyone enjoyed the day, and would suggest this experience to anyone who would like to get up-close and personal with these magical beasts.
New year - new opportunities!! Websites under construction included Cruiseholidays.co.za and VicFallsTours.com and new ventures included the purchase and renovation of the Bella Khaya guesthouse in Midrand. Congratulations to Cecile in Joburg who passed all her exams and finished her Diploma in Tourism management. Congratulations also to Zizi in Joburg who broke her own record with 7 new hairstyles in 1 month.
The office X-mas parties went with a very European theme this year. The Joburg office went with a German restaurant whilst Durban spent a very long afternoon eating Meze platters, listening to Greek music along with many glasses of Ouzo brought at regular intervals. The Joburg office was also very involved in the 12 pubs of X-mas tour as well as quite a few amazing race tours in Soweto.
Nadia in the Durban office celebrated her mm%^&phh birthday with a big bash despite the very wet weather in KZN. Other parties which caused a few hangovers included the Sun International party at Sibaya and the 3 cities Idols party at the Riverside. The month finished on a very sad note with the passing of Julia's Fiance Gary on the 20th. Our condolences to Julia and to Gary's family
